Medieval Art - The Grimani Breviary

The Grimani Breviary is a stunning example of Flemish Renaissance manuscript illumination.

It consists of 1,670 pages with around 120 are full-page miniatures of both sacred and secular subjects, such as a calendar, psalms, hymns and scriptures, and prayers for the canonical hours of the day.

It is unknown who commissioned the work, and based on identifiable hands and characteristics, was likely made beginning in the late 15th century and on into the 16th century.

In my video this week, I feature the image titled "October." It shows peasants at work in the field, sowing for the following year's harvest. While a man plows, another spreads seeds, though it seems the birds are eager to eat them!
